Garage door safety

Your garage door is an important feature of your home. It’s where you keep your car, your belongings, and sometimes it’s a place where you can get away from it all. That’s why it’s important for you to make sure it remains secure and safe. Here is a set of guidelines for making sure your garage stays that way.

  • Every once in a while, visually inspect your garage door. Make sure the cables and pulleys and springs are not loose or worn, or that anything has come loose. You should not as a rule try to do repairs on your own. There are a lot of guys who are handy around the house, but the springs in particular can be very dangerous if they snap away from their mooring. Remember those springs sometimes hold up to 1000 lbs of weight in the case of wooded or steel doors.
  • Check to make sure that the auto reversing feature is working. All garage doors today come with this feature in case a person is trapped. Nevertheless, you should check it periodically by putting something on the ground under the door.
  • Never allow children to play with the remote or with the door in general. Kids love to see things go up and down and they love the feeling of being able to use the remote. Auto reversing features will keep them from getting trapped, but there are hinges and other thing in which they can get their fingers pinched.
  • Always make sure the door is either up or down. A door that has been allowed to be partially open can slip and hit someone on the head.
